Sport refers to all forms of competitive physical activity or games which aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills whilst delivering entertainment and enjoyment for participants. It is a broad category which encompasses many different types of competition, some of which can involve extreme elements.
A number of sports are considered extreme activities in which athletes take to the skies, the sea or the land in order to test their limits and push boundaries beyond conventional safety limitations. These sports include skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking and in-line skating.
The majority of competitive sports are organised and run by the sport governing bodies in their countries. These organisations are responsible for organising tournaments and events to allow the best athletes to compete against each other.
There are a variety of sports which are popular around the world and which are contested at local, national and international levels. These can range from amateur sports to professional sporting events, including the Olympic games.
Most sports are played between two people or teams and the winner is the team that scores the most points in a game or match. However, there are some forms of competition which are not based on a team sport.
